Nigeria Opens the Lower 6 GHz Band to Accelerate Wi‑Fi 6 and Wireless Innovation

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a new Framework for the Use of the Lower Part of the 6 GHz Band (5925–6425 MHz), marking an important step in expanding wireless connectivity and supporting next-generation broadband services across Nigeria.

The framework makes the lower 6 GHz band available for Wireless Access Systems (WAS) and Radio Local Area Networks (RLAN), creating new opportunities for the deployment of Wi‑Fi 6 and other high-capacity wireless technologies. The initiative is designed to address the growing demand for faster speeds, higher bandwidth, and lower-latency connectivity.

Under the new rules, access to the band is provided on a license-exempt and shared basis, enabling eligible users to operate without individual spectrum assignments, subject to compliance with NCC technical and regulatory requirements. In addition, all devices operating in the band must obtain NCC Type Approval before they can be imported, marketed, or deployed in Nigeria.

The framework also establishes technical conditions for Low Power Indoor (LPI) and Very Low Power (VLP) devices, ensuring efficient spectrum utilization while minimizing interference. By opening the lower 6 GHz band, Nigeria joins other markets worldwide in enabling advanced wireless technologies that support digital transformation, innovation, and enhanced broadband access.
