Pakistan Updates IoT and SRD Regulatory Framework: Key Changes in V1.4

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released Version 1.4 of its Regulatory Framework for Short Range Devices (SRD) and Terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT) Services, dated December 18, 2025. This update marks a significant step toward enabling IoT innovation and spectrum efficiency in Pakistan.

Key Highlights of the Revised Framework:

  • LPWAN Licensing: Introduction of a dedicated LPWAN license for IoT services in shared frequency bands, with a five-year validity and simplified fee structure.
  • Gateway Registration & Compliance: Mandatory registration of gateways and bi-annual reporting to PTA.
  • Data Sovereignty: Strict prohibition on storing IoT data outside Pakistan without prior approval.
  • National Security Clause: PTA reserves the right to suspend services for security concerns.
  • Spectrum Allocation: Updated frequency bands for SRD, UWB, and LPWAN, including detailed technical specifications in Annexes A–C.
  • Research & Development: Exemption for non-commercial test and trial setups for up to six months, promoting innovation in academia and industry.
  • General Conditions: Emphasis on ICNIRP compliance, IPv6 migration, and adherence to data privacy regulations.

This framework aligns with global best practices and aims to foster a secure, interoperable IoT ecosystem in Pakistan. Businesses, academia, and service providers should review these changes to ensure compliance and leverage new opportunities in IoT deployment.
