India Opens Lower 6 GHz Band for License‑Exempt Wi‑Fi Use

The Government of India has officially notified the Use of Low Power and Very Low Power Wireless Access System including Radio Local Area Network in Lower 6 GHz Band (Exemption from Licensing Requirement) Rules, 2026, enabling license‑exempt operation in the 5925–6425 MHz frequency band.

Published in The Gazette of India on January 21, 2026, the new rules allow individuals, businesses, and institutions to deploy compliant Wi‑Fi and wireless access systems without the need for spectrum licensing or frequency assignment, provided defined technical conditions are met.

Key Highlights

  • Low Power Indoor Devices

    • Maximum EIRP: 30 dBm
    • Maximum bandwidth: 320 MHz
  • Very Low Power Outdoor Devices

    • Maximum EIRP: 14 dBm
    • Maximum bandwidth: 320 MHz

All devices must comply with strict out‑of‑band emission limits and use contention‑based protocols to ensure efficient and interference‑free spectrum sharing.

Operational Safeguards

To protect licensed services, the rules prohibit use of the lower 6 GHz band on oil platforms, vehicles, boats, aircraft below 10,000 feet, and for drone or unmanned aerial system communications. Equipment must also feature integrated antennas and undergo mandatory type approval.

Why It Matters

The opening of the lower 6 GHz band is a major step toward accelerating Wi‑Fi 6E and future Wi‑Fi technologies in India. It is expected to enhance network capacity, reduce congestion in existing bands, and support high‑performance connectivity for homes, enterprises, and public networks.
