On March 23, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (PSHSB) announced the addition of routers produced in foreign countries to the FCC’s Covered List, following a national security determination by U.S. Executive Branch agencies.
The determination found that foreign‑produced routers pose unacceptable risks to national security and public safety, including vulnerabilities in the communications supply chain and heightened cybersecurity threats that could be exploited to disrupt critical infrastructure and harm U.S. persons.
As a result of this action, routers produced abroad are prohibited from receiving FCC equipment authorization, unless they obtain Conditional Approval from the Department of War or the Department of Homeland Security confirming that the equipment does not present unacceptable risks.
The FCC stated that this measure is intended to strengthen the security and resilience of U.S. communications networks, particularly in response to recent cyber incidents that have exploited weaknesses in network infrastructure devices.
