Canada has released SRSP-321.2 (Issue 1, April 2026), introducing updated technical requirements for fixed line-of-sight radio systems operating in the 21.2–23.6 GHz band. The new Standard Radio System Plan (SRSP), issued under the authority of the Minister of Industry, replaces the previous framework and reflects recent spectrum policy developments.
A key change is the expansion of the frequency band, now covering the full 21.2–23.6 GHz range. This broader scope supports greater flexibility and aligns with evolving spectrum use policies for fixed services. The update also revises the RF channel arrangement, incorporating additional segments and new channel bandwidths of 60 MHz, 80 MHz, and 100 MHz, while removing narrower legacy bandwidths.
The standard introduces enhanced antenna radiation pattern requirements, improving interference management and system performance. It also streamlines the regulatory framework by removing redundant provisions already covered under general requirements, ensuring clearer and more efficient compliance.
SRSP-321.2 defines the minimum technical parameters for point-to-point fixed systems, supporting the efficient use of spectrum while enabling high-capacity microwave links. The framework is intended for system design, equipment specification, and regulatory evaluation of new or modified radio installations.
Existing licensed systems may continue operating, though any modifications will be assessed individually. New deployments, however, must fully comply with the updated requirements.
Overall, the new SRSP strengthens Canada’s approach to spectrum management in the 21 GHz range, enabling advanced wireless infrastructure, improving network reliability, and supporting growing demand for high-capacity backhaul and connectivity solutions.
