FCC Approves New GVP Devices for Faster, Smarter Wi‑Fi

On January 29, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took a major step toward next‑generation wireless innovation by approving a new class of unlicensed devices known as Geofenced Variable Power (GVP) devices. This decision opens the door to significantly faster Wi‑Fi performance and smarter connectivity across a wide range of consumer and industrial applications.

The newly authorized GVP devices can operate both indoors and outdoors at higher power levels than previous device categories, removing limitations placed on Low‑Power Indoor (LPI) and Very Low Power (VLP) devices. This enhancement empowers the development of more capable AR/VR systems, IoT technologies, short‑range hotspots, automation tools, and indoor navigation solutions.

To ensure safe coexistence with licensed services, the FCC has required GVP devices to avoid operating within certain exclusion zones and specific frequency ranges. These measures strike a balance between expanding unlicensed innovation and protecting incumbent operations.

GVP devices will operate in the U‑NII‑5 (5.925–6.425 GHz) and U‑NII‑7 (6.525–6.875 GHz) sections of the 6 GHz band. This expanded access is expected to unlock major advancements in wireless capacity, device mobility, and real‑world performance, accelerating growth across the connectivity ecosystem.

The FCC has also begun seeking further input on additional proposals, including potential power increases for composite standard‑power/LPI access points and enabling LPI devices aboard cruise ships, signals that even more enhancements could be on the horizon.

This decision is poised to drive years of innovation, bringing consumers and industries closer to the promise of supercharged Wi‑Fi and fully connected environments.
