As part of its ongoing efforts to optimize and rationalize the use of radio frequencies, the National Frequency Agency (ANF) has published updated technical specifications for maritime mobile networks. This initiative aims to ensure a transparent, compliant, and secure regulatory environment for all maritime communication stakeholders in Tunisia.
These technical specifications define the regulatory procedures, operational conditions, and technical parameters applicable to maritime mobile networks. They are aligned with:
By establishing a clear framework for the use of maritime radio equipment, the ANF contributes to strengthening navigation safety, improving communication reliability, and ensuring harmonized spectrum management throughout the national territory.
The updated requirements outline the conditions for obtaining approval to operate maritime radio equipment, including eligibility criteria, required documentation, and operator responsibilities. They also specify the frequency bands dedicated to maritime services, such as VHF, MF, HF, EPIRB, AIS, and GMDSS systems, and highlight their associated regulatory obligations and technical characteristics.
In addition, the publication details the structure and assignment rules of the Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI), which uniquely identifies maritime stations. Tunisian-registered vessels use the Maritime Identification Digit (MID) 672, enabling clear identification within global communication systems.
Through this update, the ANF reaffirms its commitment to supporting the development of the maritime sector by providing guidelines that are clear, reliable, and aligned with international standards. These measures help ensure the safe and efficient operation of maritime communications, both for routine activities and for emergency situations at sea.
